What Does It Really Cost to Run a Van for Your Business?

Business Advice

What Are the Key Differences Between Rent2Buy and Traditional Van Finance?

Rent2Buy and traditional van finance can both help you obtain a van for work, but they are different products with different application processes, ownership rules and end-of-term outcomes.

Understanding those differences can help you decide which route may be more suitable for your circumstances.

The Main Difference

Traditional van finance is a lender-backed credit agreement. Your application is assessed by a finance provider and normally includes a credit check.

Rent2Buy is a separate rental-to-ownership scheme. It does not use a credit check, although your identity, eligibility and ability to afford the monthly rentals are still assessed.

Rent2Buy and Van Finance at a Glance

1. How Traditional Van Finance Works

Van Finance Company acts as a credit broker and introduces applications to a panel of UK lenders.

Depending on the product offered, you will usually pay a deposit and then make agreed monthly payments over a fixed term.

Hire purchase is a common form of van finance. Under a typical hire purchase agreement, the lender or finance provider remains the legal owner while payments are being made.

Ownership normally transfers only after all required payments and contractual conditions have been completed, including any final option-to-purchase payment that applies.

Paying the deposit does not by itself make the van legally yours. The exact ownership position and end-of-agreement process will be explained in the finance documents.

2. How Rent2Buy Works

Rent2Buy is not conventional vehicle finance.

You rent the van for an agreed period, normally between 36 and 48 months, subject to the individual agreement. During that period, the vehicle remains owned by Rent2Buy Vans.

Rent2Buy does not carry out a credit check. However, this does not mean that every application is automatically accepted.

Applicants must provide the required identity, address and affordability documents and must meet the scheme’s eligibility rules.

After all agreed monthly rentals and other agreement requirements have been completed, you have the option to purchase the van for the current final payment of £99 plus VAT.

Ownership does not transfer until that purchase option has been exercised and the required final payment has been made.

3. Application and Approval

Traditional Van Finance

Traditional van finance normally involves:

• A credit check

• An affordability assessment

• Verification of your identity and income

• Assessment against the lender’s individual criteria

• A decision on the deposit, interest rate and agreement terms

Applications may be considered from employed customers, sole traders, self-employed applicants and limited companies, subject to lender criteria.

Approval, a particular deposit and a specific interest rate cannot be guaranteed.

Rent2Buy

Rent2Buy does not carry out a credit check, but it does assess whether the agreement appears affordable.

Applicants normally need to provide:

• A valid UK or EU driving licence

• Suitable proof of identity

• Two proofs of address

• Recent bank statements

• Any additional information requested during the assessment

Applicants normally also need to live within 100 miles of Southampton.

No credit check does not mean guaranteed acceptance. All eligibility, documentation and affordability requirements must still be met.

4. Deposits, Rentals and Monthly Payments

With traditional finance, the required deposit and monthly payment are determined by the lender, the finance product, the vehicle and the applicant’s circumstances.

A low deposit may be available in some cases, but it is not guaranteed.

With Rent2Buy, you pay the initial amount shown for the chosen van and then make the agreed monthly rentals.

Rent2Buy payments are rentals rather than loan repayments.

Before proceeding, you should check the complete agreement, including:

• The rental term

• The monthly payment

• The mileage allowance

• Insurance requirements

• Vehicle usage conditions

• Any charges that may apply

• The final purchase option

5. Who Owns the Van?

Under a typical hire purchase finance agreement, the finance provider remains the legal owner until the agreement has been completed.

You normally become the owner only after all required payments and conditions have been satisfied.

Under Rent2Buy, Rent2Buy Vans remains the owner throughout the rental term.

Once the agreement has been completed, you may choose to purchase the van by paying the current £99 plus VAT final payment.

Until that happens, the van remains a rented vehicle.

6. Credit History

Traditional van finance normally involves a credit check.

A stronger credit profile may help an applicant access a wider range of lenders or more competitive terms, although the actual decision will depend on the lender’s full assessment.

Rent2Buy may be suitable for people who cannot obtain conventional finance or who prefer a route that does not involve a credit search.

The scheme still requires evidence that the monthly rentals are affordable and that the applicant meets all other requirements.

7. Insurance, Mileage and Vehicle Use

Insurance is not automatically included with either option.

For Rent2Buy, fully comprehensive insurance must be arranged in the customer’s or company’s name before the vehicle is collected.

Rent2Buy vehicles are also subject to the mileage and usage conditions stated in the agreement, including the current monthly mileage allowance.

Customers should review these conditions carefully because excess mileage or other breaches of the agreement may lead to additional charges.

Traditional finance agreements may also contain mileage or vehicle-condition requirements, depending on the finance product.

Always read the agreement rather than assuming that every finance product works in the same way.

8. Which Option May Suit You?

Traditional Van Finance May Be More Suitable When:

• You are comfortable completing a credit application

• You want a lender-backed finance product

• You want your application considered by a panel of lenders

• You want to compare available finance terms

• You require broader UK availability

Rent2Buy May Be More Suitable When:

• You want an application without a credit check

• You can demonstrate that the monthly rentals are affordable

• You meet the document and location requirements

• You understand that the van remains rented during the agreement

• You want the option to purchase the vehicle after completing the rental term

Neither option is automatically better for everyone.

The most suitable route depends on your credit position, affordability, location, preferred agreement type and how you want vehicle ownership to work.

Final Comparison

Traditional van finance is a lender-backed credit route that is normally assessed using a credit check.

Rent2Buy is a rental-to-ownership alternative that does not use a credit check, but it still includes affordability, documentation and eligibility requirements.

In both cases, customers should understand the complete payment obligations and should not assume they own the van until the relevant agreement has been fully completed.

Next Step

Compare the available vans and choose the application route that best matches your circumstances.
