What Happens at the End of a Rent2Buy Agreement? Understanding Your Ownership Options

If you've chosen a Rent2Buy van to support your business, you might be wondering what happens when your rental period comes to an end. This article explains the key options available to you once your Rent2Buy agreement is complete, helping you make an informed decision about your next steps.

Rent2Buy in Brief

Rent2Buy is a rental-to-ownership scheme designed for used commercial vehicles. It is important to understand that Rent2Buy is not a conventional finance product, lease, or hire purchase agreement. Instead, you rent and drive the vehicle during the agreement term but do not own it while renting.

At the end of the agreement, you may have the option—but are not obliged—to buy the van for the stated final payment.

What Is the Rent2Buy Final Payment?

The final payment is a pre-agreed amount specified in your Rent2Buy agreement that you may choose to pay if you want to own the vehicle after renting it. This amount varies depending on the vehicle and your specific agreement.

Remember, this payment is optional. You are not required to buy the van simply because your rental period has ended.

Your Options at the End of the Agreement

1. Purchase the Vehicle

After your Rent2Buy rental agreement has been completed, you can decide to purchase the vehicle by paying the final payment. This transfers ownership from the rental company to you.

Note that before ownership transfers:

• The vehicle might need to be returned briefly so that any tracking equipment installed during the rental can be removed.

• You need to have arranged fully comprehensive insurance on the vehicle in your name or your company’s name prior to vehicle collection—and maintain appropriate insurance if you choose to buy.

2. Return the Vehicle

If you decide not to purchase the vehicle, it must be returned to the company as per the terms in your Rent2Buy agreement.

Returning the vehicle ends your rental responsibilities, but you should ensure:

• You meet any notice periods required.

• You understand your obligations related to vehicle condition, mileage, and any potential additional charges specified in the agreement.

3. Vehicle Change or Upgrade

In some cases, it may be possible to return your current Rent2Buy vehicle and choose a different or upgraded vehicle under a new agreement. This is subject to:

• Adequate notice

• Your account status

• Vehicle availability

• Approval and eligibility for a new agreement

This is not an automatic right and depends on the company's approval and stock availability.

Important Considerations

Ownership does not transfer automatically when the monthly rentals end. You must choose to pay the final purchase amount.

Rent2Buy does not include insurance. You must arrange fully comprehensive insurance in your or your company’s name before collecting and during the rental agreement.

Vehicles have fitted trackers during the rental agreement to safeguard the asset. These are removed upon sale.

Check your agreement carefully for details about mileage allowances (typically around 3,000 miles per month), potential excess-mileage charges, and your responsibilities for vehicle maintenance, servicing, and MOTs.

Documentation and eligibility: Rent2Buy assesses applications based on affordability evidence and eligibility criteria. There is no credit check, but acceptance is not guaranteed.

Location: Rent2Buy customers normally need to live within 100 miles of Southampton to be eligible.

Summary

The Rent2Buy scheme offers flexibility at the end of your agreement:

• You may buy the vehicle by making the final payment, gaining ownership.

• You can simply return the vehicle and walk away, subject to the agreement terms.

• You may explore options to change or upgrade the vehicle, with approval.

Always review your individual Rent2Buy agreement carefully to understand your specific final payment, term, eligibility, and responsibilities.
